1. Dear Miss Manners,
My dad friend and I were at the playground this morning with our kids and witnessed a mom who looked very pregnant (for the sake of argument, let's just say she is 36-weeks pregnant and not very comfortable and must be an angel to take her other two kids to the park all by herself) trying to get her 2 year old daughter out of a precarious situation. Her mom saw her just as she was reaching the top of a spiral ladder like this one. This overly confident little girl proceeded to stand up at the very top while her mom seemed stuck in not being able to reach her and knowing that her little girl couldn't get down by herself (the girl seemed impeded by her stylish, but not practical for climbing, pink rubber rain boots) circled around the bottom, arms out ready to catch her. My friend and I just sat there on the edge of our park benches waiting to see what this mom would do. The mom was too short (and did I mention very pregnant?) to reach the girl and so she did what seemed to be her only option - she started climbing. I've not seen many 9-month pregnant women climbing playground equipment, but I was amazed at her agility and ability to rescue her daughter and then descend the spiral ladder while holding her girl. I tried to smile at this mom as she reached the bottom with her daughter in her arms, she hadn't noticed us watching her and seemed surprised at us sitting there and stared at us as if we could have done something to help. Did I miss something?
editors note: makena is fine (I am too) but we will no longer be going to the playground by ourselves for the next 4 weeks, unless it is just a large grassy area with no trees, fences, bleachers, playground equipment, walls, or rocks.
