we were surprised this afternoon by the strong smell of fire in the air and were not the only neighbors walking outside to try and find out what was going on. Via internet research we found out that there are two large fires in san diego county creating the smoke and the strong santa ana winds were dispersing it into the air. we are still a good 45 miles from the closest fire and have all complained today of burning eyes and getting ash in our eyes if we go outside. i can't imagine being any closer to the fire and not choosing to evacuate. as it is, i will probably take the kids away from the smoke tomorrow to clear out eyes and lungs. i tried to get a picture of the smoke and haze, but it is hard to understand just how smoky it is without a comparison picture of what it looks like on a clear day. the haze grew much thicker and ash-ier as the day progressed, hopefully the winds will calm down so the firefighters can get it contained.
